The information that follows is quite important for any clients considering colour correction, going from light to dark or dark to light on previously coloured hair and the removal of unwanted tones.

Colour correction can be a long process and may not give the exact colour desired at the first attempt, this is due to a significant reason.

Porosity!

The hairs porosity plays an integral part in the hairs ability to absorb and hold a colour.  The balance of the hairs porsity is affected by several issues.

1.Previous colour treatments and the amount of them and if any harsh chemicals were used.

2.How often you wash your hair and how strong the detergent is.

3.How often its in sunlight and other atmospheric conditions.

4.Wether you swin regularly and how high the chemiclka content of the water is?

5.How often you heat style your hair

6.How often you restore the hairs balance with moisture and protein treatments

And it is because of this that often 2-3 applications maybe needed to achieve a specific result.

From light to dark

Hair that has been previously lightened needs to first go through a process of what us hairstylists call prepigmenting. Depending on  how dark you want to become this will result in the hair being dyed either yellow, orange or red, then we put the desired colour on over the top. It is very important to pre-pigment as otherwise you could end up with faded colours or at worst kharki tones. It is also extremely important to understand that your hair may have to be warmer than you would like at first, even if you are cool skin toned. We recommend that you have a colouring plan made that will get you to the colour you desire and in the quickest time, porosity allowing. Note this may mean colouring appointments in quick sucession of each other but remember we will always make a plan that fits in with your budget.

From dark to light

Hair that is too dark or has several colours through it, will need expert attention in it’s removal. The strength and timing of products will need to becarefully judged. Generally, depending on the condition of the hair, removal of unwanted colour and tones is always  possible but remember it will tend to leave the hair in poorer condition and we will always advise a home care regime to make sure the strength of the hair rebiulds and that the hair is cut to remove very dry areas after the colour removal.

Red hair

A little thought about dyed red  hair when in conjuction with colour correction, likes its counter part  natural red hair, it’s pigment molecule is made of an squidgy pentagon shape, it sits in and around the cortex (centre) of the hair and unlike its colleagues, brown ,red and yellow pigmet, it is not a variant of round, so (are you bored yet?….lol…) it does not remove that easily from the hair and in contrast, with intense reds where the red pigment is flooded  artificially all around the cortex and cuticle it tends not to not stay in well on the outer edges of the hair(cuticle)..ie clients will say their colour is not as vibrant as before when they discuss it.

So simply red is a tricky one either way. At the purcell rooms we will advise you of the best options but bear in mind it may need a few visits to achieve the very best results for you.
